Silence. That’s the first thing many guests notice about Villa Marie: the sublime tranquillity assured by its position deep inside one of St Barts’ designated green zones. As well as serenity, you get scenery: tremendous views of the sea and nearby islets – especially from an infinity-edge pool, and the surrounding sun deck’s beds and al fresco lounge. It’ll be hard to believe that Lorient’s gentle sandy beach is only a short drive away, let alone various supermarkets and restaurants.

To the rear is a lush private garden whose terrace suits book-reading or birdwatching. Equally attractive is the so-called ‘great room’ inside, just off the main sundeck: blonde woods, white shutters and high ceilings combine to create an airy, welcoming space, while retractable glass doors open to those same stellar vistas. Guests ensconced in here can watch US satellite or Apple TV channels from comfy sofas, congregate at a large dining table or use the gourmet kitchen.

Behind this is the first bedroom, affording yet more fine ocean views. Its spacious bathroom is just outside. The master bedroom is one floor down, beside the pool, and comes with a dressing area and an ensuite outdoor shower. At its entry is a small kitchenette and coffee machine. Both bedrooms boast king-size beds and their own bathtubs, meaning Villa Marie suits small families just as well as pairs of couples.
